Dressage Ethics-Intro to Rollkur
This is FEI warm up level, and use of the rollkur, which I don't believe in to begin with. The fact that it is the husband of a world calss rider is even worse, now makes me wonder about her horsemanship on any level. I don't like seeing rollkur used, and while draw reins on western horses are used to extreme extents, I don't advocate that either. But a blue numb tongue hanging out of the mouth is not a happy dressage horse.
Below is an article about it from 2006, it's still going on. And here's the nice video of rollkur in action. This movement would make a horse with a thicker throat latch pass out, and it puts the horse on the forehand. None of this is classical dressage or horsemanship.

FEI Workshop on Rollkur in Lausanne Leads to Redefinition
February 1, 2006
The FEI published a press release on the workshop they organized in Lausanne, Switzerland, to discuss the current critical issue of the rollkur. Following the article in St Georg about abusive training methods that go hand in hand with riding in the rollkur, the FEI reacted by setting up a workgroup of professionals that will research the effects of over-bending for the horse's health.
Photo copyrighted: Dirk Caremans
The group of experts included: Prof Frank Odberg, Prof Leo Jeffcott, Mariette Withages, Sjef Janssen, Prof. Eric van Breda, Dr Gerd Heuschmann, Dr Andrew McLean, Prof Hilary Clayton, Dr Andrew Higgins, Dr Emile Welling, Prof Rene van Weeren.
The major conclusion they seem to have come up with is a redefinition of the German "Rollkur" into the English "Hyperflexion".
The FEI made the following statement on their first workshop:
A most productive workshop was held on 31 January 2006 at the Olympic Museum and jointly organised by the Dressage and Veterinary Committees. The point of this meeting is to reassure the “Dressage Community” that the controversial issue of “Rollkur” (overbending) is being addressed by highly experienced experts from the equine world.
The workshop included presentations and reports on this controversial training technique and its possible side-effects that may affect the welfare of the horse. It also included a review of the need for applied research.
Approximately 60 participants, including riders, trainers, stewards, veterinarians, and members of the Dressage, Veterinary Committees and Welfare Sub-Committee attended the workshop.
Objectives of the Forum
Review the techniques of training horses
Consider possible welfare implications
Pros’ and cons’ from experts
Better understanding of the biomechanics and kinematics involved in this degree of neck movement
Reports on clinical side effects or sequelae from long term use of the technique
Discuss possible research programmes
Produce a report for the FEI to be able to plan the best way forward
Further to presentations of different preliminary research projects in the field of exercise physiology, radiology, biomechanics and schooling, the meeting reached the preliminary conclusion that, when applied by skilled trainers, there was no scientific evidence that this training method was abusive to the horse. There was clearly no evidence that structural damage is created by this training exercise, when used in the right way by expert riders.
However, the use of that technique by inexperienced people was a possible threat to the welfare of the horse. The role of top dressage riders as role models in the sport was underlined.
Most of the participants agreed that the terminology “Rollkur” was not comprehensible and decided it would be better to use a term which could be understood by riders, trainers and the general public. After an extensive discussion, it was proposed that the draft wording might be “hyperflexion of the neck” and a draft definition to this was established as follows:
Hyperflexion of the neck is a technique of working/training to provide a degree of longitudinal flexion of the mid-region of the neck. Hyperflexion cannot be self-maintained by the horse for an extended period of time.
As far as the FEI is concerned, the welfare and humane treatment of horses at FEI competitions, including the training areas and stables is paramount.
Next steps:
A more detailed definition of what is to be considered as abuse is required, e.g. stress factors, pain or discomfort.
Education of stewards to identify possible abuse and misuse of this technique, which is not restricted to dressage.
Veterinary and Dressage Committee and Welfare Sub-Committee will review the state of knowledge, submit a report of the meeting to the FEI and decide which scientific research is further needed.

Fall Colors
This is one of my favorite times of year. The harvests are coming in, apples and pears going to market, pumpkins everywhere. The leaves are bright fiery hughes of red, orange and golden yellow. There is the smell of earth and leaves in the air. I don't have everything done at the barn yet and all the horses moved, but we're working on it. I grabbed some pics of the local color.
Yesterday and the day before, we had bizarre weather again, with thunder and lightning, pouring down rain and driving winds. Today is nice and sunny with a breeze, hopefully it will dry everything out, there was even flash flooding!
So Since I can't work outside at the farm today, I have a venison pot roast in the crockpot, apple pies just came out of the oven, The Steeler vs Vikings game is on (GO STEELERS!), and I'm pulling out the last of my garden. I had peppers and zuchinni until the end! I am so looking forward to next year when I can put in a serious garden, and already have visions of a new strawberry patch and asparagus patch going in.

Snow!
A week ago, we had a freak storm come through that dumped 3 inches of heavey wet snow and just generally made everything miserbvale for a day or two. It was hard to believe! And then as quickly as it came, it melted away. Here's a shot of that day looking down the lane of the famr towards the barn.

New Digs
Today, the first official equine residents moved to the farm. Cabot had first honors, as is befitting his role as patriarch. Angel, the rescue, accompanied him. They also had their teeth done today by Dr. Tucker (http://www.theequinepractice.com/) and he did a wonderful job on them. They were so much happier when he got done. It pays to have someone who is really an equine dentist as Dr. Tucker is because it pays off for both horse and owner.
Then they moved into their pasture, and they were so happy. It felt like we had all come home. More have yet to be moved, but the most important one to me was with Cabot. This is his last stop; I think the poor guy has moved 14 times with me over his 28 years. He always took it in stride. He always just steps off the trailer and goes, "My new kingdom!". Angel was fearful when I loaded her, gave me the "Oh no, why I am leaving, what did I do" look. She looked so relieved and happy when she realized I was still there and she had a nice new pasture to go to. I wish I could explain so many things to her, she has calmed a lot but I still see flashes of fear at times. Yet she is so spunky and loving. She is an Angel! Horses amaze me with their capacity to forgive, as do dogs. Thanks God, as we are such imperfect humans.

Butterflies
Off of my deck I have several butterfly bushes. I love them both, and really enjoy seeing the butterflies and hummers that come in. I take pictures every year. This year, I got a pretty new blue one.
Friends shared that after their dogs had passed, a butterfly would appear in odd conditions and reasure them. They feel the butterfly is often a sign of the spirit of their dear passed pet, and I think I agree. One flew with the new dog while playing in the surf. Another came to his master after he had passed as a butterfly, allowing him to be petted. People can laugh, but I believe God gives us signs and comfort in many ways if we are only willing to look and watch.
It reminds me of the story of the concert world famous violinist who plays in Central Station on the side for free. Many never even looked at him. Children wanted to stop and listen but their very busy parents rushed them on. In the space of several hours, he made a whopping $33. This is a man who commands hundreds of thousands of dollars in concert easily.
But we are all too busy to stop and listen. We hear, but we do not listen. Hearing is on the outside, listening comes from within.

Furby
As I was leaving work one night, I heard the serious frantic howling of kitten seperated from his mom. And so I searched and with the help of a co-worker, found a tiger-striped, golden eyed kitten, not even 2 months old, perched atop a truck tire in the parking lot. I couldn't just leave him there, and so I scooped him up and took him to the farm overnight. I called the vet next day, got him in, and he got an overall clean bill of health.
He doesn't appear to big enough to belong to the feral momma cat's kittens at the plant, and so we supposed he may have unintentionally gotten a ride in with the vehicle he was perched on. He became the first offical farm resident! ANd, his name is Furby, and it fits! Mike says I have him terribly spoiled already.
